8th Grade Math: Students took the chapter 4 test today.

Assignments: None.

7th Grade Math: Today students began class by using their flashmasters. We then moved right back into chapter 5. We graded the section 5.2 worksheet on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers first off. We then introduced section 5.3 on multiplying fractions and mixed numbers.

Assignments: Review HW #4 is due Wednesday.

Science: Today in science students were introduced to double helixes, and the four nitrogen bases involved in the DNA replication process we learned about last week as part of the cell division cycle. We then moved into genetics and learned a bit about Gregor Mendel, the father of genetics.

Assignments: Complete the worksheet detailing Mendel's genetic work from the 1880s, due on Tuesday.

8th Grade Math: Students began class with the problem of the day before students jumped back into chapter 4 and today we learned about scientific notation. Students were introduced to standard form, product form and scientific notation, and how to convert integers into each form. After some teacher led instruction, and several examples, Mr. Olsen handed out the 4.7 worksheet and students were given 25 minutes of class time to complete the problems.

Assignments: Review HW #3 is due Friday. Complete the 4.7 worksheet (all) for Friday.

7th Grade Math: Today students began class by using their flashmasters. We then moved right back into chapter 5. Students were given 15 minutes to begin class to finish up the 5.1 worksheet before we graded it as a class. We then moved into section 5.2 and adding and subtracting mixed numbers.

Assignments: Review HW #3 is due Friday.

Science: Today in science students picked up where we left off yesterday and continued working on their posters illustrating the cell division cycle. These posters will be due at the end of class Friday.

8th Grade Math: Students began class with the problem of the day before students jumped back into chapter 4 and today we learned about scientific notation. Students were introduced to standard form, product form and scientific notation, and how to convert integers into each form. After some teacher led instruction, students tried several example problems on their way out of class.

Assignments: Review HW #3 is due Friday.

7th Grade Math: Today students began class by using their flashmasters. We then moved right into chapter 5 and began building upon the skills we developed in chapter 4 and we introduced adding and subtracting fractions. After some teacher led instruction and several examples, students were handed a worksheet to practice their skills.

Assignments: Review HW #3 is due Friday. Finish up the 5.1 worksheet #1-13 Odds only for Thursday.

Science: Today in science students were introduced to the concept of cell division. We began with a class discussion about the three main phases of cell division, the interphase, the mitosis phase, and cytokinesis phase. Within mitosis, there are four more stages, prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase. Today students began class reviewing the three main phases of cell division before jumping into mitosis. Students then began the next project, where they will build posters illustrating the cell division cycle.

8th Grade Math: Students began class with the problem of the day before students jumped back into chapter 4 and today we learned about the rules of exponents. We reviewed multiplying and dividing powers, and introduced the rules for zero and negative exponents. Again, Mr. Olsen explained the concepts and led students through several example problems. We graded the work students completed yesterday, and then proceeded to spend the rest of the hour practicing the even problems from the same worksheet.

Assignments: Review HW #2 is due Wednesday. Complete the 4.6 worksheet (evens only) for Wednesday. The chapter 4 test will be this FRIDAY!

7th Grade Math: Today students began class by making corrections to their chapter 4 tests.

Assignments: Review HW #2 is due Wednesday.

Science: Today in science students were introduced to the concept of cell division. We began with a class discussion about the three main phases of cell division, the interphase, the mitosis phase, and cytokinesis phase. Within mitosis, there are four more stages, and we will learn more about those tomorrow.

Assignments: Complete the cell division worksheet if they did not finish in the class time provided.

Science: Today in science students were introduced to the concept of photosynthesis. We began class with a group discussion reviewing plants and the process of photosynthesis, and related process of respiration. Friday and today, students were busy creating diagrams illustrating the above concepts by following some simple directions and adding some creativity to their final designs.

We reviewed multiplying and dividing powers, and did several example problems, before Mr. Olsen handed out a worksheet for students to practice their new found skills.

Science: Today in science students were introduced to the concept of photosynthesis. We began class with a group discussion about plants and photosynthesis, including a discussion about the raw materials plants need before the process of photosynthesis can occur. Today we watched a few videos from the website of Teachers Domain to help re-enforce the concepts of photosynthesis. Students were then handed a worksheet to complete verifying their understanding.

Assignments: Complete the photosynthesis worksheet packet if they did not finish in the class time provided.

8th Grade Math: Students began class with the problem of the day before students jumped back into chapter 4 and today we learned about the rules of exponents. We focused on multiplying and dividing powers, and more specifically, on multiplying exponents.

Assignments: Review Homework #1 is due Thursday.

7th Grade Math: Today students began class with their flashmasters before jumping back into chapter 4. Today we began section 4.7 and converting fractions and mixed numbers into decimals. We spent the first few minutes of class reviewing the rules for converting fractions and mixed numbers into decimals, before correcting the 4.7 worksheet as a class. We then moved into the chapter review, as the students chapter 4 test will be this Thursday (or possibly Friday!).

Assignments: Review Homework #1 is due Thursday.

Science: Today in science students were introduced to the concept of photosynthesis. We began class with a group discussion about plants and whether they eat or not. Students then did some text book readings, and answered some questions concerning the process of converting the raw materials plants need to produce glucose, a plants food.

Assignments: Complete the photosynthesis worksheet if they did not finish in the class time provided.

8th Grade Math: Students began class with the problem of the day before students jumped back into finding LCMs. Today was another day of practicing finding LCMs and LCDs. We spent the majority of the day doing examples and answering questions posed by classmates. Mr. Olsen handed out another worksheet for students to continue practicing their skills with finding the LCM and LCDs.

Assignments: Review Homework #28 is due Friday.

7th Grade Math: Today students began class with their flashmasters before jumping back into chapter 4. Today we began section 4.7 and converting fractions and mixed numbers into decimals. We spent the majority of class doing several examples, and allowing students to ask questions and receive one on one instruction from Mr. Olsen.

Assignments: Review Homework #30 is due Friday.

Science: Today in science students continued our discussion concerning the differences between diffusion, osmosis and active transport. We then finished up watching the film Osmosis Jones. When the film ended, students were handed a directional worksheet to help guide them through the next assignment, which will be to write a 1-2 page summary of the film Osmosis Jones and to answer several questions to help them organize the flow and their thoughts concerning the film.

Assignments: Continue working on writing down their thoughts about the film and build their outline, so when they come to class on Friday they can get right to work on writing their summary paper. Catch up on any missing assignments, as this is the last week of quarter number two!

8th Grade Math: Students began class with the problem of the day before students jumped back into finding LCMs. Lots of extra practice is happening in class right now finding LCMs and LCDs. We spent the majority of the day doing examples and answering questions posed by classmates.

Assignments: Review Homework #28 is due Friday. Finish the Section 4.4 worksheet for Thursday.

7th Grade Math: Today students began class with their flashmasters before jumping back into chapter 4. Today we reviewed the process of converting mixed numbers into improper fractions and vise versa. After we corrected the 4.6 worksheet, students were given the opportunity to ask questions and we did a few more example problems, before students were introduced to section 4.7 dealing with fractions and decimals.

Assignments: Review Homework #30 is due Friday.

Science: Today in science students continued our discussion concerning the differences between diffusion, osmosis and active transport. We then continued watching the film Osmosis Jones.

8th Grade Math: Students began class with the problem of the day before students were introduced to section 4.4 and least common multiples. We began by discussing the differences between factors and multiples, before jumping into the definitions and rules of finding the LCM. Students were shown two different methods in finding LCMs and we ended class by trying several example problems as exit tickets out the door.

Assignments: Review Homework #27 is due Wednesday.

7th Grade Math: Today students began class with their flashmasters before jumping back into chapter 4. Today we introduced section 4.6 and mixed numbers and improper fractions. After some teacher led instruction and several examples, students were asked to complete two different examples as exit tickets out of class.

Assignments: Review Homework #29 is due Wednesday.

Science: Today in science students discussed the differences between diffusion, osmosis and active transport. We did a class wide activity in order to demonstrate diffusion in action to start class, and that led into a discussion and a reading with several questions for students to put answers to on paper.

Assignments: Finish the worksheet handed out in class if they did not finish in the class time allotted.

8th Grade Math: Students began class with the problem of the day before students continued working with section 4.3 and learning to write equivalent fractions. After some teacher led example problems, students graded yesterdays assignment in class, before being asked to complete the even problems from the same 4.3 worksheet.

Assignments: Review Homework #26 is due Friday. Finish up section 4.3 worksheet #1-29 (evens) for class on Friday.

7th Grade Math: Today students began class with their flashmasters before jumping back into chapter 4. Today we introduced section 4.5 and comparing and ordering fractions by finding the least common denominator (LCD). After some teacher led example problems, students were handed the 4.5 worksheet to complete during class time.

Assignments: Review Homework #28 is due Friday. Complete the 4.5 worksheet if they did not finish in the class time provided.

Science: Today in science students took the knowledge they gained during yesterdays powerpoint discussion on cells and cell structure and applied it to a Discovering Cells activity. In this activity, students were comparing the organelles within a cell and the different parts of our school in an analogy form. Students continued and finished up the Discovering Cells worksheet before moving into a coloring activity, where they colored separate animal and plant cells in order to gain a better understanding of the difference between the two.

7th Grade Math: Today students began class with their flashmasters before jumping back into chapter 4. Today we reviewed least common multiples. After some teacher led instruction and several example problems, students were given 17 problems to solve on a worksheet.

Assignments: Review Homework #27 is due Wednesday. Finish up the LCM worksheet assigned in class (1-35 odds only!).

Science: Today in science students took part in an interactive discussion on cells and their structure. Mr. Olsen led the class through a powerpoint presentation where he made the analogy between cells and factories. Students took notes on a note-taking guide that Mr. Olsen provided each student.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!

8th Grade Math: Students began class with the problem of the day before students reviewed prime factorization and GCFs in order to get reaquainted with chapter 4. After some teacher led instruction and review, as well as a few example problems, students were handed a worksheet to reinforce the concepts of prime factorization and finding GCFs.

Assignments: Review Homework #25 is due Wednesday. Finish up the prime factorization and GCF worksheet if they did not finish in class.

7th Grade Math: Today students began class with their flashmasters before jumping back into chapter 4. We reviewed common vocabulary for finding factors and multiples, and students were handed a worksheet to practice simplifying fractions.

Assignments: Review Homework #27 is due Wednesday. Finish up the simplifying fractions worksheet for Tuesday if they did not finish in the class time provided.

Science: Today in science students revisited the human body systems. Students listed, identified and described the functions of the eleven major body systems. They then revisited the drawing activity that began the human biology unit with two and a half months ago.

Assignments: Finish up describing the major functions of each of the human body systems in their science notebooks.
